For Mabel, Duan and Kevin

These pages hold what his people could not leave only in memory.

A wedding day in the sun. A team of small boys in red jackets. Orange bikes beside the water, and a fire already going. The unplanned visit on a Saturday. The joke waiting in his pocket. The friend who made a heavy day lighter, and a complicated thing simple.

They called him Johan, Oom, JK, and tjom. Grumpy as they come, someone wrote, and loved anyway. A husband who treated Mabel’s joy as his own. A father whose pride in Duan and Kevin came up over coffee, year after year.

The words below are kept exactly as they were sent, in English and in Afrikaans. This is not a speech. It is everyone, gathered.

A few of the days they kept

Student room mate of Mabel

Christelle Taute

Johan was die wonderlikste man vir Mabel. As buitestaander was dit vir my duidelik soos daglig dat Mabel se vreugde ook syne was. Ek is dankbaar vir die wonderlike man wat hy vir my Roomie was.

Mag Johan in vrede rus.

JK, jy was n karakter, n liewe karakter. Onthou jy jou Vrystaat Cheetah vlag 😀
Baie liefde Mari

I met Johan way back in 2003 when we worked together at UniBank, a division of Absa Bank. We immediately hit it off, and over the years we became very good friends.
Johan was probably one of the best technical minds I have ever met. What made him so special was his ability to “dumb complex IT systems down” so that doff people like me could actually understand them 😊. He had an incredible way of making complicated things seem simple.
We shared some memorable adventures over the years, but one of the most memorable was our trip to visit Gerrit in Mozambique. If I remember correctly, it was a rather quick and impromptu arrangement. Johan, their Dad and a few friends all crammed into the bakkie, bike on the trailer, and off we went. Looking back, those are the kinds of adventures and memories that you realise become truly precious with time.
Johan was always ready to help, and of course, he had that very unique sense of humour. He was one of those people who could always find a way to make you laugh, even when things weren't going quite according to plan.
The boys were his absolute pride and joy, and during our regular coffee and lunch catch-ups I would invariably get the latest updates. Duan, the brilliant young mechanic, and Kevin, plying his trade in the US. It was clear how immensely proud he was of both of them.
Professionally, I will always remember Johan for his willingness to go the extra mile. He had an incredible ability to put the customer first, regardless of the system, process or challenge we were working on. He cared about getting things right and, more importantly, about the impact on the end user.
As a friend, I will remember him as someone who was always willing to listen, always ready with a wisecrack to diffuse a situation, and always there when I needed help, advice or simply someone to talk to.
I am certainly going to miss my friend. I will miss the chats, the humour, WhatsApp chirps, the advice and, most of all, simply knowing that Johan was there.
I can only hope that, with time, the wonderful memories you have of him will bring some comfort and healing to Mabel and the boys.
Rest well, my friend. You will be greatly missed.

Charl & Madelein Kleynhans

😀 So hy was eerste op 'Seun'.

40 year old friendship & partner in crime

Andre (Moose) Bites

This beautiful man loved practical jokes……. He surprised me one birthday in Umhlanga while I was sitting in a restaurant and got the waitress to hand me a bottle of mampoer then appeared at the table where we shared a tearful moment together. That’s the man he was - considerate, full of love, and always there in the little moments of life….. in the thick of it not being content to sit on the sidelines. Miss you my mate.

Grumpy as they come, and respected by everyone anyway. He never softened his opinions, but you always knew he had your back. Rest easy, old man. It'll be a lot quieter without you.

JK was a very dear friend and we often shared a laugh or a complaint about work and life. My load has been heavy recently and JK knew that and was always ready with some words of encouragement and a hug to make me feel better and halve my sadness.

When ever he biked in the Freestate I would get random photos of koppies around our farm reminding me of home.

I walk past his desk daily and have to pause now to remind myself how precious life is because he is no longer there in person but I still hear him asking me if my car is broken because I run so much, so between my sadness and sorrow for loosing a friend I smile with fond memories.

Rest my friend
You were so loved
I hope you knew it
